Temperance organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874. Campaigning against the use of alcohol and in favor of labor laws and prison reform, the W.C.T.U. became one of the largest and most influential women's organizations of the 19th century. It became global when the World W.C.T.U. was founded in 1883. Margaret Keenan was born in Batesville, Ohio, in 1872. She came to Alaska in 1914 to assume a post as principal of the Skagway schools, a post she held until 1916. She then accepted the post of superintendent of schools in Fairbanks, which she held until 1918. In 1920, Keenan married Martin Harrais, a miner.
